The Boondocks White Washed

If you are a true fan of the show and what it originally represented then I’m sure you will have mixed feeling about the upcoming 4th season as I do. Once again the powers that be took it upon themselves to somehow manage to take from a person of color their intellectual property. Aaron McGruder  whom created and executive produced the show through seasons 1 through 3 has no involvement whatsoever with the upcoming season 4.

Adult Swim which is the network that The Boondocks aired on , made a statement saying that  “this season was produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined”.

Now to me that sounds like some real bullshit, why would you proceed with production due to a disagreement with production? Especially from the creative talent? Who actually just wants to take his time to put out the quality of work the fans are used to. Aaron McGruder did not make any official statements at the time of the incident but he did announce on his Black Jesus page that “Just found out someone has hijacked The Boondocks facebook page. This was done without my permission and I have absolutely no control over the content being posted.” I’m sure we all know who the someone is.

So as the new season premier date approaches (April 21st) Aaron McGruder finally spoke out about leaving his show behind and working on his new project on the same network Adult Swim (shit sounds fishy to me. Your forced out of your own shit but still decide to create a new project with the same people??) saying

“As the world now knows, The Boondocks will be returning for a fourth season, but I will not be returning with it. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Sony and Adult Swim for three great seasons.

I created The Boondocks two decades ago in college, did the daily comic for six years, and was showrunner on the animated series for the first three seasons. The Boondocks pretty much represents my life’s work to this point. Huey, Riley, and Granddad are not just property to me. They are my fictional blood relatives. Nothing is more painful than to leave them behind.

To quote a great white man, “Hollywood is a business”. And to quote another great white man, “Don’t hold grudges”.

What has never been lost on me is the enormous responsibility that came with The Boondocks – particularly the television show and it’s relatively young audience. It was important to offend, but equally important to offend for the right reasons. For three seasons I personally navigated this show through the minefields of controversy. It was not perfect. And it definitely was not quick. But it was always done with a keen sense of duty, history, culture, and love. Anything less would have been simply unacceptable. As for me, I’m finally putting a life of controversy and troublemaking behind me with my upcoming Adult Swim show, BLACK JESUS. AM”

This same type of shit happened to my boy Dave Chappelle and his show. You would think that they would take more precautions and safeguard against these type of things happening. I’m pretty sure we will see a whole bunch of bullshit and REAL racist innuendo coming from the show now. But I will give season 4 a chance and pass judgment at that time.  But I’m pretty sure that the antics of the character Uncle Ruckus will no longer be the light hearted banter Aaron meant it to be.
